The Raad van Beheer

The Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland (abbreviated: ‘Raad van Beheer’ or ‘Raad’) is the principal cynological organisation in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1902 and is located in Amsterdam.

The Raad van Beheer is a federation of associations of the dog world, and is itself an association. The members of the Raad van Beheer are the Dutch breed clubs (about 155), the regional clubs (about 70), along with a number of clubs which focus on specialist activities. Together they represent about 120,000 members.

The Raad van Beheer is a member of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which is an international umbrella organisation.

Tasks

Tasks of the Raad van Beheer

  • Representation of the general interests of cynology and the dog fancier
  • Enforcement of the regulations amon the members/clubs
  • Maintenance of  the Dutch pedigree book for pure-bred dogs
  • Identification (by microchip) and registration of pedigree dogs
  • Promotion of the health and well-being of dogs and canine populations
  • Promotion of a positive social acceptance of dog ownership and cynology in Dutch society
  • Promotion of cooperation with other welfare societies for animals
  • Enforcement of legal rules and regulations especially concerning health, behaviour and well-being of pedigree dogs
  • Protection of dog breeds
  • Promotion of quality level of dog breeds
  • Issuancee and administration of kennel names and check of kennels
  • Promotion of international agreements and treaties serving the aims of cynology
  • Faciliatation of rules for all kinds of dog sports in the Netherlands (exhibitions, championship clubshows, open club shows)
  • Administration and awarding of championship prizes
  • Training of Dutch judges
  • Advice and support for owners and potential owners of pedigree dogs.
