History

The organisation of cynology in the Netherlands started in the second half of the nineteenth century.
Initially there were three associations:
- The Hunters’ Society (Koninklijke Nederlandsche Jacht Vereeniging Nimrod, founded January, 1874)
- The Dutch Kennel Club Cynophilia (Nederlandsche Kennelclub Cynophilia, founded April, 1890)
- The Netherlands Cynological Union (Kynologen Vereeniging Nederland).
On 18 December 1901 these three associations came together to form the ‘Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland’, whose aim was to serve as a central point for:
- The Dutch pedigree book (NHSB), previously maintained by Nimrod
- The register of dog names (previously the responsalbility of Cynophilia)
- General regulations governing dog exhibitions
- Organisation of championship prizes and championship titles
- Settlement of disputes.
More than a hundred years later, these activities are still carried out by the Raad van Beheer.
The Raad's activities, however, have expanded considerably as a result of the popularity of all aspects of new dog sports, health and welfare issues and the demands of dog owners, breeders, members and other groups in.
