Cynology covers all aspects of the relationship between people and dogs, pedigree or otherwise.

An important area is, of course, expertise regarding the breeding of purebred dogs. But canine health and well being, along with all aspects of dog sports, also form a part of cynology.

It is a considerable field of activity given that there are about 2.1 million* dogs in the Netherlands. Approximately 700,000 of these dogs have a FCI pedigree (35%) and belong to one of the approximately three hundred and fifty breeds recognised in this country.

The official name of the Dutch Kennel Club is ‘Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland’.  It is the principal cynological organisation in the Netherlands.
