The Dutch pedigree book (NHSB) part I from 1890

The Dutch population of purebred dogs is registered in the Dutch pedigree book, ‘Nederlands Honden Stamboek (NHSB)’.

This is the only pedigree book in the Netherlands recognized by the FCI and by the national kennel clubs of countries who are not a member of the FCI, such as The Kennel Club in the UK and the American Kennel Club.

The NHSB recognises three types of registrations of descent:

- the main Pedigree Book

- the Appendices

- the Provisional Register.

1. The main Pedigree Book

Dogs with at least three generations of ancestors registered in the NHSB, or an equivalent pedigree book in a foreign country, will be registered in the main Pedigree Book. In principle, if the breed has varieties, all ancestors must belong to the same variety.

2. The Appendices to the main Pedigree Book

In some cases it is possible to register dogs in an Appendix of the main pedigree book.

The Appendix has three subdivisions, indicated by the letter G (of generation) and a number: G-0, G-1 and G-2.

In Appendix G-0 registrations include:

- dogs who are not registered in the Dutch pedigree book or in that of one of the other FCI recognised countries, but who are, to the knowledge of the Raad or the breed club, valuable to the breed; the Raad always consults the relevant breed club on this;

- dogs who belong to a different variety group (coat, colour, size, ear carriage) than their parents, in such cases, the breeder must add a motivated request to the request for registration; if it is important for the preservation of the breed or a variety, the Raad may - after consultation with the breed club – register directly in the main Pedigree Book the offspring of dogs who do not belong to the same variety group; in very special circumstances the same can happen with offspring of parents who belong to different breeds, which differ only minutely;

- dogs whose parents are both registered in the subdivision G-2 of the Provisional Register (see below).

In Appendix G-1 registrations include:

- dogs with registered parents (registration in the Provisional Register is not enough), but with one or more non-registered grandparents;

- dogs with one parent registered in the Provisional Register in G-O, the other in the NHSB or one of the appendices.

In Appendix G-2 registrations include:

- dogs with registered parents and grandparents, but with one or more non-registered grandparents;

- dogs with one parent registered in Appendix G-1, the other in the appendix G-1, G-2 or the NHSB.

3. The Provisional Register (VR, ‘Voorlopig Register’)

The Raad van Beheer can open a Provisional Register for Dutch breeds under development which are not yet recognised by the FCI,. This is also possible for foreign breeds not yet recognised by the FCI.

Registration in the Provisional Register can be preceded by an assessment in which the dog is tested to ensure it conforms to the breed standard.

Dogs registered in the Provisional Register or in Appendix G-0 will not be awarded a championship title, as a consequence they can not win a CAC.

Terminology on the pedigree

‘Niet geverifieerd’ - Not verified. Indicates that the ancestry is not registered in a pedigree book recognized by the FCI. This may happen in young breeds such as the White Swiss Shepherd Dog.

NEK - Colour not recognised. Means the dog has a coat colour which is not recognised in the FCI-standard. Since mid 2007 no colour is mentioned, just NEK.

Application for pedigrees. To register puppies, a certain procedure must be followed. (See BRS).

Pedigree book history - The offspring (litters) of dogs registered in the NHSB have been reproduced as a digital Pedigree Book, the ‘Stamboek CD’, which is available from the Raad van Beheer. Printed editions of the Pedrigree Books, dating as far back as about 1900, may be consulted in our library (by appointment).

Copies of pages can be made upon payment of the appropriate fee.

More information about the "Pedigree CD" can be found under the button on the left side.
